Potassium was originally named from 'pot ash'. The main method of producing potassium was to soak wood ashes in water, remove the shavings and evaporate the remaining liquid in an iron pot. When the water was gone, a white substance remained called 'potash'. We now know that the potash is potassium carbonate.
